Description

He JBL PO4 sensitive phosphate test is used to regularly measure and control the concentration of phosphates in fresh water, salt water and ponds garden within a range of 0.05 to 1.8 mg/l (ppm). Thanks to a compensation method that JBL has specifically developed, it is also possible to obtain precise and reliable results even in slightly brownish water, as may be the case when using peat filtration or treating diseases. The great sensitivity of this test allows us to detect very early any risk that may begin to arise due to an excessive concentration of phosphates, and to take appropriate measures in time to counteract it.

Why do you have to do the test? Phosphate, an important nutrient for plants, is only present in very low concentrations in natural waters . On average, the values are approx. 0.01 mg/l in fresh water and approx. 0.07 mg/l in salt water. Plants and algae have adapted to this shortage of phosphates, so they can subsist on minimal amounts.

The phosphate in aquarium water comes mainly from the digestion processes of the fish and food remains. If conditions are adverse (especially in crowded aquariums ), the concentration of phosphates can sometimes reach values 100 times higher than normal. An inevitable consequence is that Unwanted algae proliferate very quickly. This risk It can be detected by measuring the phosphate concentration in time with the JBL PO4 sensitive phosphate test, and can be avoided by taking appropriate measures to counteract it. In this regard, it is important to know that algae are capable of storing phosphate in large quantities, so they can continue growing in water as before even after having reduced the phosphate concentration.

Therefore, the sooner the risk of increased phosphate concentration is detected, the better the prospects for success in quickly avoiding a possible algae infestation. In freshwater aquariums, values of up to 0.4 mg/l are tolerable, although it is best not to exceed 0.1 mg/l.

In aquariums with abundant vegetation and no fish or only a few small fish, the opposite can happen: phosphate is scarce and must be added in a measured amount so that the plants can develop properly. This is especially the case in aquatic landscaping, also called aquascaping, a hobby that is increasingly widespread in aquariums and which consists of creating underwater landscapes.

The phosphate concentration of marine aquariums should be as similar as possible to the natural concentration.

In garden ponds it is recommended to maintain values below 0.05 mg/l. Thanks to Limnology (study of fresh waters) it is known that considerable algae growth does not occur if the permanent phosphate concentration (all year round) is less than 0.035 mg/l. In the best of cases, the phosphate in the garden pond cannot be quantified with this test, that is, it will be less than 0.05 mg/l. Above all, you must avoid adding fertilizers to the pond from the environment.

Contains 30 tests.
