Permanent Co2/pH Test, JBL

The test has an apparatus that contains an indicator liquid separated from the surrounding water by a layer of protective air. Through the lower hole of the device, CO2 diffuses into the indicator liquid, passing through the protective air layer. Shortly afterwards, the indicator shows exactly the same CO2 concentration as the rest of the aquarium water, changing its color depending on the concentration of CO2:

• The blue color indicates that the CO2 is insufficient
• Green color indicates that CO2 is adequate
• Yellowish green to yellow indicates too much CO2

The described layer of Protective air is essential for the indicator to function correctly since, if there were not, it would mix with the surrounding water and lose its color.

Advantages

Many permanent CO2 indicators are usually filled with a mixture of aquarium water and indicator. In this way, the carbonate hardness of the aquarium must always be determined separately in order to calculate the correct CO2 concentration.
